ATTENTION: THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION WILL BE PRESENTED TO THE TDC MEMBERSHIP AT OUR NEXT MEETING, ON THURSDAY, 28 MARCH 2019.

Resolution in Support of TDC Implementation of Environmental Action Plan

Whereas the burning of fossil fuels continues to acidify the oceans and warm the atmosphere at a record pace, through the generation of carbon-based greenhouse gases (1);

Whereas the fossil fuel economy causes great harm to the people of Michigan, in the form of chemical and dust contamination of the air and water, unaffordable water and utility rates, and the generation of greenhouse gases;

Whereas the conversion from fossil fuel use to renewable energy sources brings the benefits of cleaner air and water, reduced cost, new opportunities for employment, and lower greenhouse gas emissions;

Whereas, more locally, Grand Rapids, Northport, Ann Arbor, and Traverse City have committed to goals of 100% renewable energy by 20205, 2025, 2035, and 2040, respectively (2).

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Troy Democratic Club encourages members to contact Troy and Clawson city leaders asking them to adopt a local Climate Action Plan, with specific goals for reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from municipal operations, and providing residents with support in reducing their own greenhouse gas emissions, and urges them to commit to setting ambitious goals of 100% renewables in city operations.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Troy Democratic Club encourages members to contact Troy and Clawson city mayors asking them to join the Compact of Mayors (3) who are endorsing the Paris Climate Agreement, along with 17 other Michigan mayors, including the mayors of Detroit and Flint.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that each meeting and function of the Troy Democratic Club ensure, to the greatest extent possible, the use of environmentally-friendly materials, eliminate the use of single-use plastics, provide recycling bins, and consider practices of reduction and reuse where possible.

-Proposed by the TDC Environmental Justice Committee, and approved for presentation to the general membership for consideration and acceptance by the TDC Executive Committee on 2019-03-13.
